Dealing With Poker Variance

We've previously discussed the seriousness of bankroll management. In this article I would like to discuss variance in poker. Variance is the central motivation for keeping a big bankroll when playing this game. Because if you're a winning player, wouldn't it be pointless to have a bankroll? If you were always a winner, you'd never be required to make an additional poker deposit for the rest of your poker career... right? I wish it were that easy too!

The problem is, you'll see that despite how perfectly you play, you will still have losing days when playing poker. At times the poker hands you're given will be awful and you'll need to fold all of them to prevent losing an outrageous amount of money. Other times the Texas Hold Em hands you're dealt will be awesome, but of course they still lose because sometimes your opponents will just get lucky. It's a fact that occasionally you'll view your odds for winning a hand using a poker odds table, and you'll find that you actually lost the hand even though you got it in as a 85% favorite.

To survive playing this game, you need to realize that variance is the reason why bad players keep playing poker. They are your source of money. Since you won't be able to hope for variance to always be kind to you, you must figure out how to conquer it. Do this by using proper bankroll management and also avoiding problems with tilt. Figure out how to shrug off bad variance and as long as you have the proper bankroll, you'll be back to your usual winning ways in no time!
